Updated Filming Schedule

We have had a few problems with filming  due to me and Kate as well as our actors not all being available on the same days, we haven't managed to get the last bit of filming done. However, we plan to finish all of our filming by the end of this week. In order to do this we created a filming schedule that is suitable for when everyone is available to film. On Monday we plan to film after school in the drama studio and we are going to film close up shots of Luke singing, the guitar and Luke tapping his feet to the music. Tuesday is optional based on if we finish filming all the shots we need of Luke in the studio. On Wednesday we are going to after school at the Marina. And on Sunday we are going to film the rest of the narrative with all of our actors down Portishead Marina and Lake grounds. After all these dates on our filming schedule we should be completely finished filming.

Filming Update

The majority of the filming for the performance element of our music video has been completed. Although when we looked back and watched the footage that we had filmed in the drama studio we have spotted that there are a few shots that we could include in order to improve. For example, we need to film more close up shots of when Luke is performing such as close up of him playing the guitar, is feet tapping, close up of his lips singing the lyrics etc. We also need to film Luke and his 'girlfriend' having an argument in the studio to finish the flashbacks that are going to put into the music video. Once we finish that we then need to film the story element to our video.

Atlantic Records

As we are using Ed Sheeran's song 'Give Me Love' we have to ask Ed's record company for permission to use the song as our coursework otherwise it would be copy right. As Ed Sheeran's record company is Atlantic Records we emailed them to explain what we are doing as part of our A2 media coursework and to ask for their permission to use the song. Below is a screen shot of the email that we sent to them.
The email me and Kate sent to Atlantic Records.

Poster Design

Initial Poster Design

Initial Poster Design
After creating our script we started to come up with initial ideas for our poster design for Ed Sheeran's song 'Give Me Love'. Above is a sketch of what our poster is roughly  going to look like. We are going to take a picture of Luke who is playing Ed in our music video and put it in the center of the poster. We are also going to have 'Give me love' written loads of times in small text on the top half of Luke and one in big text that stands out amongst the rest. Then below where it says 'Luke Barnett' we will have 'Ed Sheeran' and then below that the date of when the song will be realest.

Original Ed Sheeran Poster

Ed Sheeran's Give Me Love
Original Poster
In general in Ed Sheeran doesn't seem to be featured on his own posters. They typically have objects on them for example his poster for 'Lego House' it has lego bricks on it in a shape of foundations to a house portraying the name of the song. The main picture of the 'love hearts' in in the center of the poster which is the same as our poster design but the name of the song is in the bottom right hand corner of the poster and Ed Sheeran's name in on the top left hand corner. The poster is quite spread out and simple. It is also in black and white but one of the love hearts that has the song name 'give me love' is orange which makes the song stand out, this makes it the poster effective as it is clear to the audience of what the song is called.

Script

In our music video our characters Luke and Dani have an argument. Me and Kate created a short script for Luke and Dani to learn. Even though the audience will not be able to hear the argument and will only be able see them arguing we thought it would be useful to have a script. The script is a typical argument that a teenage couple would have. We didn't create a script for our other two characters (Sam and Megan) as we didn't think we need a script we will just direct them and tell them what they need to do/say whilst filming.

Script

Dani: I’ve seen your texts

Luke: What texts?!

Dani: The texts from her.

Luke: I don't know what you're talking about?

Dani: My friend saw you two and told me everything.

Luke: It was nothing, you're over reacting.

Dani: I can't do this anymore... (Dani turns around and starts to walks away, Luke grabs her arm and tries to stop her)

Luke: Don't go!

Dani: let go of me. (Dani pushes Luke off her and walks away)

Filming Schedule

This is our Filming schedule that we created which will help us know what day and what time we will be filming each shots in our music video. It also tells us what actors we will need, what equipment we will need and where we will be filming it. This is only a rough guide as things are bound to change and be altered, according to what days we are all free and to film and what days the drama studio will be available.

Inspirational Music Videos

Before we made our storyboard for our music video, me and Kate looked at different existing music video of artists we like, in order to get some inspiration for our music video. Here are some examples of music videos which we watched and inspired us and gave us some ideas to include in our own music video.

Ed Sheeran - Small Bump

We decided to watch another Ed Sheeran music video as we are filming a music video for Ed Sheeran's song 'Give Me Love'. Me and Kate got a lot of our inspiration from Ed Sheeran's "Small Bump" Music video. The location of the video is based in a hospital in which Ed is sitting down a singing, meanwhile there are many different scenarios happening with other patients. For example, you see a couple arguing, a child playing, nurses and doctors walking around, etc.  All these scenarios happen at different times with every patient gradually fading away, leaving only Ed in the shot. All speech is muted so only the song playing over the top can be heard, I really like this technique as it adds a sense of emotion and a feeling to the song but also to the narrative of the story line. Me and Kate both agreed on incorporating a similar idea to this into our music video.

Olly Murrs - Dear Darlin'

After looking at Ed Sheeran's "Small Bump" Music video, me and Kate were also very inspired by Olly Mur's Music video for his single "Dear Darlin'". The effects used in this music are very similar to the ones used in Ed Sheeran's with idea of a scenario happening during a scene. Although in this video it used as flashbacks. We decided that we are going to be using the idea of flashbacks in our music video to explain to narrative.

Annotation of Lyrics

This is an annotation of the 'Give Me Love' lyrics. The Lyrics act as our script for our music video. Along sides of the lyrics we have wrote down details of each shot number and shot type. Although this is how we want our music video to turn out like, we know that when filming the real thing, things are going to change and maybe not turn out how we wanted it too and we might have to ad-justify it slightly. Anything that we may ad-justify or change will be done in order to improve the final outcome of our music video.

Ed Sheeran Audience Research

For part of my audience research I asked three different people who like to listen to Ed Sheeran's music questions about Ed Sheeran and his songs. I did this to get some sort of an idea of what conventions they expect to see in Ed Sheeran music videos and get some audience feedback.

Interview one

1) What do you like about Ed Sheeran?
A: "I like his casual styled appearance and how he is different from other artists he doesn't 'dress to impress'."

Actor and Costume

For our music video we have decided that we're only going to have one main character. We have decided to use a boy (Luke Barnett) as the artist because the lyrics of the song are sung by 'Ed Sheeran'. This could link to a convention of music videos having the 'artist' to be the main character in the video. We will be using other characters in our music video but just as extra's. Theses other characters that we are going to use, will be picked at random this will depend on who is avaliable at the time.

Luke Barnett
We have decided to use Luke because we thought that Luke had a look that we wanted to use in our music video. As Luke is our main character there will be a variety of different shots that include him in several different locations throughout the music video. Luke will also have shots of him singing and playing the guitar in the studio.

Costume
We are probably going to use two costumes for Luke mainly because in the music video we show Luke in two different locations - In the drama studio performing and in the narrative part of the music video. As we want people between the ages of 16-20 to be able to relate to our music video, we have decided to keep our costumes young and but trendy to show this we thought that we would use clothes that people our age would wear. In order to keep our character looking young, we have decided to get Luke to wear jeans and t-shirt. We think that this gives a youthful look and also a costume that our audience can relate to. When we film the flash back of Luke having an argument with his girlfriend he will be wearing dark coloured clothing to represent his mood, but still keeping the costume young and trendy. He will be wearing black skinny jeans and a dark blue checkered shirt with some trainers.

Dani Owens

We decided to use Dani because we needed someone to play Luke's girlfriend and it needed to be someone Luke was friends with so that it wasn't difficult or awkward for them to act like a 'couple'. Dani will be used in the flash back shots throughout the narrative part of the music video of her and Luke breaking up.

Sam Harper and Megan Maunder

Sam and Megan will be playing the other 'couple' that features in our music video. They will be shown after Luke breaks up with his girlfriend and goes for a walk around the marina. During this Luke will see the couple being all 'loved up' and will make him angry and it will then show him having flash backs of his argument with his girlfriend.

Monday 16 September 2013

Planning

Narrative

Throughout the song the audience will see clips of Luke singing the lyrics in the drama studio. We also see 'flashbacks' Luke and his girlfriend having an argument and her leaving him. We will also see Luke in different locations around Portishead, these locations will be places where he has happy memories of being with his girlfriend. But we will see a couple being all happy and 'loved up' with Luke in the background at these different locations which make Luke feel lonely and guilty about the argument he had with his girlfriend. We will also see flashbacks of Luke and his girlfriend arguing to reflect the lyrics of the song.

Performance

Luke will be singing the lyrics to the song in the studio whilst playing the guitar. The boy and girl who play the couple in the music video will also have to act out different scenes in different locations.

Costume and Props
Luke will be dressed quite indie as it is the style of the music, so he will be wearing skinny jeans, Nike shoes and a top. The boy and girl who are going to play the couple in the music video will also just be wearing quite simple and casual.

Location

The location of the music video is going to be filmed at different locations around Portishead. The main locations are Portishead docks, Royal beach and Battery point. We chose to stay in Portishead as not just me and Kate live in Portishead but our characters all live locally as well so they are  all easy locations for us all to meet. We also chose to film in Portishead as we will have a lot of equipment with us such as camera, tripod, props etc. Because of this it would be difficult to commute to Bristol and back with all the equipment. We have also to shot a large amount of the music video in a studio. There is a drama studio located in school that would allow us to have access to lights. We have asked for permission to film in the studio and have been granted access to it on particular days after school.

Camera Angles

Throughout the music video we will be using different camera shots. In the studio we will be using a lot of close ups of Luke when he is singing so it emphases the lyrics of the song. We got this idea from Miley Cyrus' music video 'Wrecking Ball' which has lots of close ups of Miley's face to show the emotion of her face. We will also do mid shots to long shots to also get shots to emphasise Luke playing the guitar.

Camera Movements

Throughout the music video we will also be using a variety of different camera movements as well, such as circle panning to emphases Luke playing the guitar at the beginning of the music video. We will also use a tracking shot to follow Luke when he is walking away at the end of the music video and goes out of shot and we can see the couple in the distance.

Lighting

When we are filming outside the lighting will be natural so if we film on different days we need to make sure the weather is similar so the lighting looks the same as on the previously filmed footage. We will also be filming in the studio so will be using a spot light on Luke whilst he is performing. Artificial lighting we are planning to use is in the studio, we are planning on using a spotlight, and light produced from a projector. We got the idea for the projection light from Ariana Grande's music video "The way".

Song Choice

Me and Kate decided that our song choice is Ed Sheeran's song 'Give Me Love'. We decided to choose this song as there is a wide range of story lines we could develop from this song, with many different opportunities. We now need to focus on creating a narrative to fit in with our chosen song.

Give me love like her,
'Cause lately I've been waking up alone.
Paint splatted tear drops on my shirt,
Told you I'd let them go.
And that I'll find my corner,
Maybe tonight I'll call ya,
After my blood turns into alcohol,
No I just wanna hold ya,
Give a little time to me, or burn this out,
We'll play hide and seek, to turn this around,
All I want is the taste that your lips allow.
My my, my my-y oh give me love,
My my, my my-y oh give me love,
My my, my my-y oh give me love,
My my, my my-y oh give me love,
My my, my my-y oh give me love
Give me love like never before,
'Cause lately I've been craving more.
And it's been a while but i still feel the same,
Maybe I should let you go
You know I'll find my corner,
And that tonight I'll call ya,
After my blood, is drowning in alcohol,
No I just wanna hold ya,
Give a little time to me, or burn this out,
We'll play hide and seek, to turn this around,
All I want is the taste that your lips allow,

My my, my my-y, oh give me love
Give a little time to me, or burn this out
We'll play hide and seek, to turn this around
All I want is the taste that your lips allow
my my, my my-y, oh give me love
my my, my my-y oh give me love,
my my, my my-y oh give me love,
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover (Ah! )
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover (Love me, , love me)
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover (Give me love)
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover (Give me love)
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover (Give me love, love me)
M-my my, m-my my, m-my my, give me love, lover (Give me love)

Questionnaire Feedback

I handed out my questionnaire to 20 people. I used a questionnaire because it is the quickest way to get feedback because it isnt time consuming and only takes a minute to answer my questions. I sent out my questionnaire to different ages so I could get a variety of answers from different age groups. I then used the results from the questionnaire and put it into bar charts and pie charts to demonstrate the answers. I have also analysed them to give an explanation as to what they mean.

Question One - Are you male or female?
This graph shows that 9 males and 11 females answered my questionnaire. I asked this question so that I could have different genders answering my questions. If I had asked just one gender to answer my questionnaire, I may not have been able to get a variety of answers that I received.

Question Two - How old are you?
As I wanted a variety of answers from my questionnaire, I asked the ages of the people who took it because I wanted to make sure that I got a range of ages answering my questions. This way I can see how different ages use music videos in different ways.

Question Three - What is your favourite music genre?
The pie chart shows a large proportion of people preferring the 'pop' genre of music. This could link to the high level of 17-19 year olds that answered my questionnaire, as this could be the most popular genre among them. This also could reflect that pop artists music videos are the most popular in the industry. Also, those who are pop artists need to ensure that their music videos target the majority.

Question Four - Where do you watch music videos?
YouTube and Vevo were the most popular way in which people access music videos. YouTube has 100,000,000 videos watched daily and this includes a high percentage of music videos.

Question Five - How often do you watch music videos?
A high amount of people watch music videos once a day. This means that over the years, the music video has become more important in selling the music of a particular artist. From the results it shows that if music videos are popular, so are the songs. This is why many artists have started to create unique videos, that they will increase the popularity of their music.

Overall, after looking at the results from the questionnaire feedback it is clear that the increase in people accessing music videos mostly online. This means that artists need to make their music videos more unique in order to stand out from the other music videos. The pop genre also seems to be the most popular, meaning that any pop artists need to make sure their video targets a wide percentage of the population all over the world.

Questionnaire

Now that I have done my research into music videos and analysing different digipaks, I now need to conduct secondary research into my audience. I will aim to find out what genres of music are the most popular, what type of music videos they like watching, where they watch them and how often they watch them. I will be finding out all this information by creating a questionnaire.

Imagine Dragons - Digipak

The front cover of Imagine Dragons' album titled 'Continued Silence' is very simple. There is only one person on the cover and it is hard to tell whether they are a member of the band or not. Normally the artist is dominating the cover of the digipak which acts as a selling point, but not in this case which is what makes this digipak unique.

What makes it more unique is the action that the person on the front cover is doing, they seem to be in a state of levitation. This brings an element of mystery to the front cover, this may intrigue the audience. The briefcase is the only prop in the digipak cover, it is used to enhance the mystery that has been created by the person holding the briefcase and goes well with the colour scheme that is used.

The font also adds to the 'mystery' of the cover as the  the letters are incomplete. The title of the album is very defined and stands out clearly.  The dark colours used throughout the cover creates a feeling apprehension, which gives the cover a great selling point as it makes the audience want to buy the album. The name of the band is displayed in big, bold font which makes it clear to the audience who the band are. The background of the cover also adds to the mystery. It seems to be set in the woods on a misty day. The whole concept of the cover, the mist, the dark theme suggests that the target audience is aimed at older people, because these people will possibly connect with the songs better than younger people.

Gabrielle Aplin - Digipak

The only prop used is the multi-coloured umbrella. The use of the multi-coloured 'rainbow' umbrella contrasts with the plain black and white background scenery. The costume that Gabrielle is wearing, the brightly coloured yellow dress also contrasts with the background which makes her stand out. The black and white background makes an extreme contrast between the sky and the floor. The black simple font used for her name 'Gabrielle Aplin' contrasts with the white background and typically used for many products with her name on. The name of the album is written in a script like font effectively adding to the 'indie'  theme. The background and the colour scheme also reflects the name of the album 'english rain' as the colour of the background is very dull and gloomy which reflects the English weather (English rain) which what makes this album cover effective.

The back of the album used the same black and white background which is used on the front of the cover. It also uses the same dull and gloomy theme. This is effective because it uses continuity throughout the digipak. I like Gabrielle's digipak because it keeps continuity throughout all the sides, which I believe makes it more visually appealing. Therefore, when it comes to designing my own digipak for my music video I will stick to the same theme throughout.

Ed Sheeran - Digipak

On the front cover of the album is a picture of  of Ed. The same pictures of Ed are used on the front and the back of the album just edited in different shades of orange I think this is because it is used as a reference to Ed's ginger hair.

Another difference is that the picture on the back is more close up. On the bottom right hand corner it has the name of the artist 'Ed Sheeran' is in a white font then 'the debut album in black underneath in the same font, underneath that is the name of the album which is '+' but in white again. On the back of the album cover where all the songs on the album is listed the font style is different but sticks to the black and white theme. The name of the album '+' is also on the back on the bottom right hand side of the album.

I like this Ed Sheeran's digipak cover because it is simple but extremely striking and most definitely stands out from other digipaks and because of the use of the orange colour, the audience are expected to know that it Ed Sheeran due to his distinguishing features.

Video Five

Ke$ha "Die Young"

Genre: Pop

"Die Young" is a song by American recording artist Kesha. It was released on September 25, 2012 as the lead single from her second studio album, Warrior. The pop song was written by Kesha, Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco, Cirkut, and fun. singer Nate Ruess. Recorded in July 2011, Kesha wrote the lyrics after traveling around the world and embarking on a spiritual journey.

Mise-en-scene
The location of this video seems to be set in a run down temple/church. The costumes and make up used in the music video are punk/rock style as they are wearing leather with studs. Also, Ke$ha is wearing heavy black make up which is unusual for a pop music video. Both leather costumes and dark heavy make up are normally expected to be seen in a rock music video.

Camera Angles
There are different camera angles used throughout the music video but the main one that stood out was the close up shots and extreme close ups of kesha's lips showing her singing the to emphasise the lyrics of the song.

Editing
There is a lot of editing done with this music video. One editing technique that is used is jump cuts, the cuts are really quick this is effective because of the fast tempo of the music, if the jump cuts were slow it wouldn't fit in with the song.

The kaleidoscope effect is also used in the music video, making different patterns and converging two pictures together into a shot. Futuristic lights have also been edited on to the music video. The kaleidoscope and futuristic lights create an illusion effect to the video.

Video Four

Rizzle Kicks "When I Was A Youngster

Genre: Alternative hip hop

"When I Was a Youngster" is the second official single released by British hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks, from their debut studio album, Stereo Typical. The single was released on 21 October 2011 in the United Kingdom

Mise-en-scene
The location changes throughout the music video but the main locations are in a school, park, bedroom and in a field. All the different locations in the video are used to represent different ages. There are also a variety of different costumes used throughout the video they are used to show all the different jobs they wanted to be when they were little, which shows the real meaning of the lyrics. The different costumes include; astronaut, fireman, cowboy and indian.  The use of props is also used to represent age which is the main story of the song. The main props used are a toy bow and arrow and water guns when they are dressed up in cowboy and indian costumes.

Camera Angles
There is a variety of different camera angles in the video such as upwards and downwards shots, the shots could show a contrast that they are getting older and have no idea about what they want to do as a career and they are still a kid at heart and want to do jobs like be a 'cowboy' and 'indian' even though they are both unrealistic.

Lighting

The lighting used in this video is mainly natural lighting as the locations in the video are mostly set outside in a park or a field therefore there isn't really a need for anymore lighting.

Video Three

Gabrielle Aplin "Home

Genre: Folk

"Home" by English singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin. Home is from the album 'English Rain' which was released on 13th May 2013.

Mise-en-scene
The video is about a girl (Gabrielle Aplin) who gets robbed by a group of men who steal her car so she has to walk and find shelter and food. At the end of the video she finally finds a big and starts to interact with some locals.  Its when this happens that she comes to realise that it's not necessarily her home she's needing, but company of other people. The locations in the video are landscapes that are quite remote and bare therefore it makes the audience really understand her struggle.

Camera Angels
One camera angle that stands out that was used in the video was when the camera was looking down on Gabrielle, this shot might suggest that she is feeling  depressed about her situation and makes her seem vulnerable

They also use an establishing shot to show the location of where they video is set, the landscape look deserted and lonely which makes the audience feel sorry for her because shes on her own in the middle of nowhere.

Close ups are also used throughout the video to express her emotions which are mainly unhappy however towards the end it shows her emotions change as she finds a place and feel content and shows she is finally happy.

Editing
Jump cuts are used throughout this video but stands out near the end of the video when it shows flashbacks of her journey whilst being at the place where she is happy and has meet people and seems content with the place that she has found.

Lighting
I think lighting is important in this video as I think it is used to it shows her struggle throughout the video. At the start of the video the lighting is quite gloomy which represents the mood of the video until the end of the video when the mood changes.

Also a lot of natural lighting is used in this video which is expected as it is filmed in deserted locations therefore would look out of place if it had spot lights.

Video Two

Ed Sheeran - "Give Me Love"

Genre: Indie pop

"Give Me Love" is a song by singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was released as the sixth and final single from his debut studio album + on 21 November 2012. The song was written by Sheeran, Jake Gosling and Chris Leonard.

Mise-en-scene

The video is about the idea of 'cupid'. She is seen watching over couples, using her bow and arrows to ignite people's love for each other. Throughout the video after watching many couples come together cupid becomes overwhelmed with the need to find someone of her own to love.

The use of blue, desaturated filters convey the cold and lonely emotions she is feeling. This is further enhanced by the distorted effect created by the smoke and blur in which she is concealed by. This is also shown through the clothes she wears as they are plain, colourless and bland which may reflect her view on life.

 Camera Angels

Close ups used in the video focus on significant objects, such as the wooden mannequins, they are used to help to illustrate the plot line for the audiences. At the beginning of the video the shots are longer and use slow panning and dolly shots. But when the song reaches the climax, the shots are much shorter with rapid editing, which builds suspense. The cuts between the different shots seem to be random and are not in sync or in a particular order, which also conveys her disillusions and confusion.

Lighting

The use of bright artificial lighting used throughout the video emphasises the lack of happiness that she feels. The lighting used in the video reflects the narrative of the song and the emotions that cupid expresses.
